BREAKING NEWS: Kimi Raikkonen quits Formula 1

The ex-Ferrari driver and 2007 Championship winner wasn’t able to reach an agreement with McLaren for a drive next year with Lewis Hamilton.

“The Formula One alternatives for next season were McLaren or nothing,” Raikkonen’s manager Steve Robertson was quoted as saying by Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat. “Kimi and McLaren could not reach an agreement, so he will not drive at F1 level – at least not next year.”

Predictably, the English team has gone ahead and signed Jenson Button, champion of the recently concluded 2009 races, making for an all-English squad and possibly the strongest pairing of drivers seen since the Senna days.

But we all kinda saw this coming didn’t we? Especially after we sat down, did the maths and realised that Kimi would probably be earning more sitting out next season than if he actually raced!

That’s possible only because Ferrari was in a hurry to pack the Finn off earlier than what was stipulated in his contract and snapping up Fernando Alonso, hailed by many as the most naturally gifted driver in the sport. But the agreed sum would only be paid in full if Kimi made the decision to not race next season.

So is this the end of Kimi? Well, no.

“Kimi still lives and breathes driving ambition,” he added. “In that sense a year off means nothing. More important is to find a place for Kimi where he can fight for victory and the world championship.”
