NEWS: Malaysia boleh!!

September 25, 2009 1 comment

I recently bought myself a t-shirt with the words “Malaysia boleh, everything also can” written in white on a luminous green speech bubble. Now, since I’ve been wearing it to work, everyone except our Malaysian colleague have been asking me what’s so boleh about Malaysia.

Smoking anywhere, the ability to share some of your money with the friendly police officers and the very fact Malaysia is not part of Singapore are three of the more common  reasons why Malaysia will always be more boleh than it’s neighbour.

I just found a new reason. Read more…

NEWS: The Indians are at it again, this time with electric cars

September 24, 2009 Leave a comment

Indian-based carmaker Reva has revealed two new electric car concepts at the Frankfurt Motor Show that contains features that are not yet seen on current electric cars

The NXR Intercity, with NXR standing for NeXt Reva, is a four-seater hatchback that is powered by an electric motor and an advanced lithium-ion battery pack. Reva claims that the NXR has a range of 160km on a full charge and can reach a top speed of 104km/h. A full recharge takes about 8 hours, but if a rapid charger is used, that time falls to 90 minutes. A 15 minute charge will give a range of 40km.

The NXR also boasts of keyless entry, a push button ignition, and an “intelligent” digital display. There is also an advanced telematics system with “SMS alerts and commands such as distance-to-empty and time-to-full charge, remote cabin heat/cool, a monthly eco-drive check by email, service and insurance alerts, remote diagnostics and healing and REVive remote emergency charge.”

Reva’s “remote recharging system” is a roadside assistance program that allows REVive service personal to “activate a reserve amount of energy” from the batteries via telephone or text message, to allow the driver to get to a location where they can properly recharge the car.

The NXG, which stands for NeXt Generation, is a two-seat, targa-top model with a range of 200km and a top speed of 130km/h. This model will go on sale in 2011, while the NXR is expected to go on sale by early 2010.

NEWS: Carlsson reveals new CK20 based on the Mercedes-Benz E500 Coupe

September 24, 2009 Leave a comment

German tuner Carlsson has given the Mercedes-Benz E500 Coupe a tune-up, bumping up horsey power to 435bhp

The Carlsson CK20, as the new car is named, has an increased power output of 435bhp and 600Nm of torque. New stainless steel sport exhaust silencer, with dual oval pipes, contribute 11 of those horsepower while also providing a more robust exhaust noise.

With an overall increase of 47bhp from the standard E500 Coupe’s 388bhp, the car needs help in reining the power in. And Carlsson has taken care of that with a new coilover suspension with damping and height adjusting that can lower the car up to 30mm. There are also new REVO 20-inch light alloy wheels which come in a dual-tone finish.

Cosmetic additions are limited, with only a front and rear spoiler being added, although there is also an optional RS front lip. Inside though, Carlsson has made its presence known by offering new gearshift and steering wheel covers in a leather/ultra-suede combo, aluminium covers for the pedals and illuminated floor mats with the Carlsson badge.

NEWS: Aston Martin Rapide officially launched at Frankfurt Motor Show

September 23, 2009 Leave a comment

rapide1smallThe Rapide was first seen in concept car form at the Detroit Motor Show back in 2006, and the production version unveiled at Frankfurt looks virtually identical to the concept, with only a few design changes. The tiny side intakes in the front bumpers are deleted, while there is now a new swage line across the side of the car.

Design highlights include the ‘swan wing’ doors, which rise upwards and outwards as they swing open, along with hidden door handles, LED tail lights, dual exhaust tips a boat-tail style rear decklid spoiler and 20-inch alloy wheels outfitted with Bridgestone Potenza tires.

Inside, the Rapide is typically Aston Martin luxurious, with leather upholstery, walnut trim, and iridium silver accents. Other features include a rear centre console, automatic climate control, individual seating for four with heating, organic electroluminescent (OEL) instrument displays, and LED interior lighting. In terms of technology, the Rapide has a GPS navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 1000-watt Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio system with iPod and USB connections.

The Rapide is actually a hatchback, with a huge tailgate lifting up for access to the cargo area. While the boot space is only 301 litres, it can be expanded to 750 litres by folding down the electrically-powered rear seats.

Under the hood, the Rapide is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine that produces 470bhp and 600Nm of torque. Combined with a six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission that has steering mounted magnesium shift paddles, this enables the Rapide to go from 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds, and reach a top speed of 303km/h.

The Rapide uses a modified version of Aston Martin’s aluminium V/H platform, with an independent double wishbone suspension using coil springs, anti-roll bars and monotube adaptive dampers. The car measures 5019mm in length and 1360mm in height.

According to Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez, the “Rapide is the culmination of the Aston Martin range of sports cars, a car that seals the revival of a truly admired marque. There is now an Aston Martin for every taste and for every use.” He continued, “With (the) Rapide, the entire family can enjoy their Aston Martin together in unison, in an invigorating yet comfortable environment, sitting low, with plenty of visibility from every seat and with new levels of comfort, refinement and entertainment.”

BREAKING NEWS: Renault F1 gets two year suspended ban

September 21, 2009 Leave a comment

n776555586_5619050_5740Renault have been dealt a conditional ban from the FIA Formula One World Championship after the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) found them guilty on Monday of conspiring to cause a deliberate crash in last year’s Singapore Grand Prix.

Investigations by the Council and by Renault found that team boss Flavio Briatore and executive director of engineering Pat Symonds, both of whom have now left the team, planned the crash with driver Nelson Piquet in order to benefit the race strategy of Fernando Alonso, who went on to win. Neither Alonso nor any other Renault personnel were aware of the conspiracy.

In addition to banning Renault, the WMSC handed out hefty individual penalties to Briatore and Symonds. Neither will be allowed any involvement in FIA-sanctioned motorsport, Briatore indefinitely and Symonds for the next five years. Piquet, who was dropped by Renault in July, was granted immunity from sanction for volunteering his evidence in the investigation.

In a press release, the team said “We are very sad to find ourselves in front of the Word Motor Sport Council today.

“By way of background, as a result of our own enquiries, we informed the FIA last week that we would not defend the charges and we accepted our responsibilities in relation to the incident in Singapore and we immediately took appropriate action inside the team.

“Today, we fully accept the decision of the Council. We apologize unreservedly to the F1 community in relation to this unacceptable behaviour. We sincerely hope that we can soon put this matter behind us and focus constructively on the future. We will issue further information in the next few days.”
